Described as “world-class” (Ottawa Citizen) and “a delicious swirl of music” (Classical 96.3 FM), the award-winning Payadora Ensemble blends Argentinian and Uruguayan tango with jazz, classical, and world influences. With virtuosic performances full of joy, passion, and spontaneity, Payadora has earned acclaim as one of Canada’s premier chamber groups.
Winners of the 2024 Folk Music Ontario Award for Silent Tears: The Last Yiddish Tango and the German Weltmusikpreis RUTH Award, the ensemble has topped the World Music Charts Europe and received international praise from outlets including the BBC, NPR, CTV, CBC, and the Bangkok Post. Their music is both innovative and deeply rooted in tradition, reimagining tango and folk with contemporary artistry.
Since forming in 2013, Payadora has sold out venues across Canada, Europe, South America, and the U.S., including live-to-air performances on the BBC. Recent highlights include collaborations with PointeTango Dance Company, the London Symphonia, and international festival appearances from Madrid to Rio. Their current lineup features Rebekah Wolkstein (violin, vocals), Drew Jurecka (bandoneon, violin, mandolin), Joseph Phillips (double bass, guitar), Mark Camilleri (piano), and Elbio Fernandez (vocals).
